In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Fo Guang Shan and the centennial of its founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, under the theme “Passing the Light for Sixty Years • Honoring a Century of Wisdom,” Austin Xiang Yun Temple held a Buddhist lecture on July 11, 2026. The temple invited James Chao, International BLIA Lecturer and Senior Chairman of the Board of Westlake Corporation, to present a talk titled “Practicing Humanistic Buddhism in Everyday Life.” Approximately 60 participants from diverse cultural backgrounds attended the event.

Drawing from the Kalama Sutta and other Buddhist scriptures, James Chao explained how Buddhist teachings can be meaningfully integrated into modern life. He encouraged attendees to cultivate ethical conduct by managing their actions of body, speech, and mind, while developing a correct understanding of non-self, impermanence, karma, and the cycle of rebirth. He emphasized letting go of attachments and awakening the inherent Buddha nature within each person. Chao also shared inspiring stories about Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s vision, perseverance, and lifelong efforts to modernize Buddhism, leaving a deep impression on the audience.

In his closing remarks, Venerable Jue Ji, Abbot of Austin Xiang Yun Temple, reminded participants that true wisdom in spiritual practice lies in letting go of attachment while remaining fully present and living with ease and freedom in everyday life.

Following the lecture, attendees gathered at Teahouse for lively exchanges and meaningful discussions on how Buddhist teachings can help people find inner stability and peace amid the rapid changes of modern society. The event concluded in an atmosphere of Dharma joy and warm community exchange.
