Expanding Global Horizons and Broadening Perspectives: Fo Guang University Students Intern at Xiang Yun Temple in Texas, Deeply Experiencing Buddhism and Multiculturalism

To broaden their international perspectives and deepen their understanding of Humanistic Buddhism, four students from Fo Guang University in Taiwan namely Li Shaocheng, Li Shuwei, Chen Changyun, and Hsu Yu-ming traveled to Xiang Yun Temple in Texas, USA, for a two-month overseas internship.

With the support of Xiang Yun Temple and the Austin Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA), the students fully participated in Dharma service preparations, shrine hall service, and administrative affairs during their first week from June 29 to July 4. Through these experiences, they personally witnessed the process of promoting Humanistic Buddhism overseas.

At the same time, the students immersed themselves in an English-speaking environment and bravely communicated with local residents and international devotees. This not only greatly improved their English communication skills but also helped them gain a deeper understanding of American society through cross-cultural activities, cultivating a more inclusive and diverse worldview.

During the internship, the Buddha’s Light Association provided attentive care, including food, accommodation, and daily support. The students, who had traveled far from home, were deeply moved and said that it “felt like coming home,” allowing them to focus wholeheartedly on learning without worries.

This internship not only demonstrates Fo Guang University’s achievements in promoting international education but also builds a bridge for students to connect with the world. The four students will return to Taiwan with rich practical experience and an expanded global perspective, continuing to shine and contribute in the future.
