Reported by Lily, Austin
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States’ Independence Day and the founding of the nation, Fo Guang Shan Xiang Yun Temple held the “July 4th Walk to Awareness” event on July 4 under the theme “Celebrate 250 Years of Independence Day with Mindfulness.” The event attracted more than 70 devotees and community members. The temple was decorated with American flags and red, white, and blue elements, and the celebration opened with a performance of the U.S. national anthem by a Korean singer.
Venerable Jue Ji, temple supervisor, led participants in a walking meditation session and shared that true freedom arises from letting go of afflictions while cultivating wisdom and compassion. He encouraged participants to integrate mindfulness into their daily lives.
Chou Li, president of the Austin Chapter of Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA), welcomed guests including U.S. Army Buddhist Chaplain Ammartek, Venerable Zhen Guan, and students from Fo Guang University participating in a summer internship program, highlighting the spirit of cross-cultural exchange.
The event also featured a national holiday trivia activity hosted by Fo Guang youth, combining themes of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence with the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. The interactive session received enthusiastic participation from attendees. A vegetarian lunch was served by members of BLIA’s Young Adult Division (YAD) and students from Anderson High School, with support from sponsorship provided by H-E-B.
Venerable Jue Ji expressed hope that through Independence Day celebrations, the temple could promote mindfulness, compassion, and gratitude, while fostering harmony among diverse communities. He extended blessings for the nation’s prosperity, social peace, and world peace.
