Xiangyun Temple Chinese Lecture Series: From the Lotus Sutra to Fo Guang Shan Management Philosophy

On May 31, Xiangyun Temple held a Chinese-language lecture titled “Women’s Rights in Humanistic Buddhism,” presented by Dr. Guo Miao, attracting more than eighty participants.

Using stories from the Lotus Sutra, such as the chapter “The Dragon King’s Daughter Attains Buddhahood” and examples from the Universal Gate Chapter (Guanyin Bodhisattva Chapter), Dr. Guo explained that Buddhism emphasizes equality beyond gender distinctions. She pointed out the evolution of Guanyin Bodhisattva’s image and highlighted the important role and influence of women in the development of Buddhism.

She further stated that Humanistic Buddhism, as advocated by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, values equality and places importance on developing everyone’s potential. She encouraged participants to make use of their strengths and serve society. She also shared her own experiences studying and serving at Fo Guang Shan, encouraging participants to take responsibility for their own causes and conditions and to grow through learning and service.

During the Q&A session, the speaker emphasized that all people possess Buddha-nature equally and all can attain Buddhahood. She encouraged everyone to transcend gender differences through wisdom and compassion and to put the spirit of Humanistic Buddhism’s equality into practice. By combining Buddhist scriptures, academic research, and practical experience, the lecture left attendees with deep inspiration and reflection.
