City of Austin Proclaims “BLIA Day,” Recognizing Contributions to Community Service and Cultural Harmony

Austin, Texas — May 28, 2026 — Austin Mayor Kirk Watson officially signed a city proclamation declaring May 28 as “BLIA Day” (Buddha’s Light International Association Day) in recognition of the longstanding contributions of Fo Guang Shan Xiang Yun Temple and the Austin Chapter of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA). The proclamation honors their dedication to Humanistic Buddhism, cultural and educational programs, charitable service, and the promotion of world peace.

The proclamation was publicly presented on behalf of the Austin City Council by Council Member Krista Laine, who commended Xiang Yun Temple for its years of community engagement and service. Through meditation classes, Tai Chi, tea meditation, vegetarian advocacy, youth development programs, and interfaith dialogue, the temple has become an important cultural and charitable bridge within the Austin community.

Fourteen BLIA officers and members attended the ceremony to witness the occasion, including Venerable Jue Ji, Venerable Yi Song, Venerable Yong Jia, Venerable Ru Yuan, and other BLIA leaders and members, who shared in the honor and celebration.

In her remarks, BLIA Austin Chapter President Lily Zhou expressed gratitude to the City of Austin for its support and recognition. She reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to serving the community with compassion, kindness, and dedication.

Venerable Jue Ji also emphasized that Xiang Yun Temple will continue to promote cultural, educational, and charitable initiatives that foster understanding and connection among diverse communities. Guided by Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s philosophy of Humanistic Buddhism, the temple remains committed to contributing to a more harmonious, compassionate, and joyful society.
