Interfaith Dialogue Promotes Understanding: Xiang Yun Temple Participates in National Scriptural Reasoning Training Exchange

On May 26, 2026, Fo Guang Shan Xiang Yun Temple was invited to attend the opening dinner of the NetVUE Scriptural Reasoning Training Program hosted by St. Edward’s University. Venerable Jue Ji, Director of Xiang Yun Temple, and Joshua Clark, Community Outreach Director of the Austin Chapter of the Buddha’s Light International Association, participated in the event alongside scholars, educators, and religious leaders from across the United States to explore interfaith understanding and collaboration.

The keynote presentation, “Ravens and Animals in the Bible,” was delivered by Dr. Ashleigh Elser of Saint Louis University. Drawing on biblical narratives and contemporary research, Dr. Elser examined the symbolic role of ravens as agents of divine care and compassion. Participants from various faith traditions also shared perspectives from their sacred texts regarding animals, compassion, and the value of life. From the Buddhist perspective, stories from the Jataka Tales were presented to illustrate the Bodhisattva spirit of compassion and selfless service.

During the discussions, Venerable Jue Ji emphasized that the purpose of interfaith dialogue is to respect differences while fostering mutual understanding and friendship. She also introduced the principles of Humanistic Buddhism, highlighting its teachings on respect for life, equality, and universal compassion. Joshua Clark exchanged ideas with fellow participants on topics including religious education, interfaith cooperation, and community service.

Through sincere dialogue and meaningful exchange, the event further strengthened understanding and collaboration among people of different faith traditions, encouraging collective efforts toward social harmony and world peace.
