Xiang Yun Temple Welcomes Laredo High School Teachers and Students to Experience the Beauty of Buddha's Birthday Traditions and Humanistic Buddhism

AUSTIN, Texas - On May 23, Xiang Yun Temple welcomed 27 students and teachers from United High School in Laredo, Texas, for an educational and cultural visit designed to deepen their understanding of Chinese culture and Buddhist traditions. The students are currently enrolled in an AP Human Geography course, and the visit provided a unique opportunity to explore the values, practices, and cultural heritage associated with Buddhism.

As the visit took place during the Buddha’s Birthday celebrations, the group was first treated to performances by the Xiang Yun Temple Community Choir, which presented "Harmony Is Never Too Late" and "The Prayer." Students and faculty also enjoyed a special Buddhist music program featuring Brad Jacobson and four professional musicians.

The visitors then viewed a film on the life of the Buddha, toured the Main Shrine Hall, and learned about the Buddha’s teachings, Fo Guang Shan, and the principles of Humanistic Buddhism. The program offered participants a meaningful introduction to Buddhist philosophy and its application in contemporary life.

Following lunch, the group explored the temple’s outdoor grounds and the statue of Avalokitesvara (Guanyin). They also participated in a Tea and Zen experience led by Venerable Jue Ji. During the session, Venerable Jue Ji introduced the traditions of tea culture and the spirit of Buddhist practice, guiding students to appreciate tea through both aroma and taste while experiencing the mindfulness and tranquility embodied in Zen practice.

The visit concluded with the presentation of commemorative gifts and a group photograph, marking a successful and memorable cultural exchange. Through firsthand experiences of Buddha’s Birthday traditions and Humanistic Buddhism, students gained valuable insights into Chinese cultural heritage and Buddhist values.
