By Liu Mingfang | Austin, Texas

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of Fo Guang Shan, Xiang Yun Temple held a “Global Synchronized Sutra Copying Cultivation” event on May 17, attracting many of devotees in a solemn and peaceful atmosphere.

Participants included children, youth, and senior devotees, with people of all ages gathering together under the guidance of the monastics to respectfully copy the Heart Sutra. Through each mindful stroke, participants calmed their minds and reflected upon the wisdom of the Dharma, demonstrating Fo Guang Shan’s Humanistic Buddhism spirit of monastics and lay followers practicing together.

Before the event, the monastics shared that sutra copying is not merely writing words, but also a practice of self-cultivation and mindfulness. It helps stabilize the body and mind, purify worries and afflictions, and serves as an important spiritual practice in today’s fast-paced world.

Many young participants shared that the practice helped bring inner peace and taught them to let go of distractions. Senior devotees also expressed that years of cultivation had helped them face life with greater gentleness and compassion.

Xiang Yun Temple stated that this event not only commemorated Fo Guang Shan’s 60th anniversary but also symbolized Fo Guang members around the world practicing together across borders with pure hearts, praying collectively for world peace and harmony in society, while continuing to pass on the wisdom and compassion of Buddhism.
