Austin Fo Guang Youth Group Attends North America "White Elephant" Leadership Training in Houston

From April 3 to 5, the Austin Fo Guang Youth Group (YAD) traveled to Chung Mei Temple in Houston to participate in the Fo Guang Shan North America "White Elephant" leadership training. Hundreds of young participants from across North America gathered to exchange ideas and deepen their understanding of Fo Guang Shan and Buddhist principles. Through classes and workshops, senior members guided newer participants in learning teamwork and inspired a sense of mission.

Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the event, participants reviewed the history of the youth group and listened to life stories shared by Chen Cheng-hui, Chair of the BLIA Youth Development Committee, and Venerable Huijin. Their talks helped attendees appreciate the spirit of legacy and continuity. The curriculum also introduced the Four Great Bodhisattvas, encouraging members to reflect on compassion, diligence, and making vows, while cultivating the bodhisattva path.

In addition to classroom learning, participants practiced altruism in daily activities through rehearsals, chanting, group exercises, and exchange sessions. In the evening, a commemorative concert honoring Venerable Master Hsing Yun was held, featuring dance, songs, and a blend of Eastern and Western music, creating a warm and moving atmosphere.

On the final day, the focus was on developing "White Elephant" leaders, emphasizing both Buddhist knowledge and leadership skills. Senior members shared their growth experiences and encouraged participants to register for the White Elephant qualification exam. This year, two members from Austin committed to taking the exam, demonstrating their aspiration to take on future responsibilities as Buddhist youth leaders.
