By Hsiu-Ling Hsieh, Merit Times Correspondent, Austin Report
On February 24, 2026, with arrangements made by Ms. Jo, 15 members from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Texas at Austin visited Xiangyun Temple for the third time, embarking on a meaningful journey that combined lifelong learning, cultural exploration, and spiritual exchange. The group was guided by local youth volunteer Brother Ezra.
OLLI provides adults aged 50 and above with a pressure-free, non-credit learning environment. Its courses span the humanities, sciences, and arts, emphasizing interaction and diverse exploration. Many participants bring rich life experiences and hope to deepen their understanding of Eastern culture while gaining spiritual inspiration.
That morning, the group gathered at Dripping Water Café to participate in a Tea Chan (Zen tea) session led by Venerable Jue Ji, with tea served by volunteer Mariza. In a quiet atmosphere of seated meditation and tea appreciation, participants read excerpts from 365 Days for Travelers, admired Venerable Master Hsing Yun's calligraphy piece "Forbearance Gives Strength," and shared personal reflections on facing life's challenges.
Afterward, the group visited the dining hall to learn about Maitreya Bodhisattva and the traditional monastic dining etiquette. They respectfully joined their palms and recited the English version of the Four Gāthās of Gratitude before joyfully enjoying a delicious vegetarian meal. Each participant also received a Year of the Horse keychain as a commemorative gift. On behalf of the group, Ms. Jo expressed heartfelt gratitude to the temple for providing such a warm and deeply enriching spiritual experience.
