Encounter in the Space of Buddhism: University of Texas Students Visit Xiangyun Temple
By Bob Taylor
On February 21, 2026, twelve students from The University of Texas at Austin's Department of Art History and Asian Studies visited Xiangyun Temple, guided by local Dharma teacher Tam. The group embarked on a cultural experience blending academia and spirituality.
The students arrived during an English-language meditation session. The atmosphere of chanting was solemn and serene, providing first-time visitors with a personal encounter with Buddhist practice. A post-session discussion allowed them to cross-check their classroom learning with real-life religious experience. During a tour of the main hall, the guide explained the design and spirit of Humanistic Buddhism, including the Diamond Sutra wall mural, and introduced the symbolic meanings of the images of Shakyamuni Buddha, Medicine Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, and Guanyin Bodhisattva—as well as the pure vase and ocean waves—conveying compassion and widespread care, and their connection to modern society.
In the outdoor garden, the Noble Eightfold Path pavilions created a tranquil space, making the teachings tangible. The visit concluded with the students expressing their gratitude; they took home commemorative keychains and other gifts, bringing this enriching learning experience to a warm close.
