Xiangyun Temple's Laba Congee Warms Hearts

Sharing the Wisdom of the Middle Way and Compassion Amid a Cold Wave

By Liu Mingfang, Austin Report

As a cold wave struck on January 24, Xiangyun Temple proceeded as scheduled with its Laba congee cooking and distribution event, allowing the community to feel warmth and care despite the bitter cold.

Led by four monastics and Chen Rui, President of the Chinese Division of the Buddha's Light Association, volunteers completed purchasing and preparation in advance and worked together to make the Laba congee. This year, eight large pots were simmered, filling the air with rich aromas. Nearly 500 people benefited from the flavorful, generously prepared congee, symbolizing the joy of the Buddha's enlightenment and embodying the Humanistic Buddhist spirit of caring for all beings.

On the day of the event, Venerable Ruyuan and President Chen Rui visited 99 Ranch Market and several nearby businesses to distribute the congee, delivering blessings throughout the community. Volunteers also included informational flyers explaining the origins of Laba and the significance of the Buddha's enlightenment. Both local and international community members eagerly tasted the congee and shared it with family and friends. Shop owners and residents alike expressed that, in the depths of winter, they felt warmth in both body and spirit, as well as the strength of community mutual support.

On January 26, Laba Day itself, Xiangyun Temple will open its morning service and invite the public to participate in collective practice, experiencing the wisdom of the Middle Way and the spirit of gratitude.
