Veterans Visit Xiangyun Temple to Experience Walking Meditation
Reported by Humanistic Buddhism Correspondent Hai Pei, Austin,TX
On January 22, Xiangyun Temple welcomed visitors from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, specifically from the Center for Development and Civic Engagement. Two officials, Skinner and Waller, were personally received by Venerable Jueji, who guided them in experiencing Buddhist walking meditation.
The Venerable explained the significance of walking meditation and mindfulness practice in Buddhist cultivation and in caring for all beings. He also introduced the temple's long-term efforts in supporting military service members and veterans, especially the annual walking meditation event held every July 4, which helps participants find inner calm, healing, and emotional restoration.
The two officials expressed deep appreciation for the temple's dedication and invited the monastic community to visit the Olin E. Teague Veterans Medical Center in Temple, Texas, to further promote communication and cooperation. Both sides hope to integrate medical care with spiritual support in order to build a more comprehensive network of care.
Afterward, the guests toured the temple's meditation spaces and community service areas. They shared that they look forward to returning in the future and participating again in the annual walking meditation event, with the hope of strengthening the connection between Buddhist communities and the veteran population.
