Xiang Yun Temple “Opening the Door to Wisdom” — English Three-Day Meditation Retreat Concludes Successfully
By Humanistic Buddhism Society Reporter David Huang, Austin
From November 7 to 9, Xiang Yun Temple held a three-day English meditation retreat titled “Opening the Door to Wisdom.” Under the guidance of Venerable Jue Ji and with the dedicated support of local volunteers, the retreat concluded smoothly and meaningfully. Centered on the theme of wisdom, the program integrated meditation, Dharma talks, mindful work, and creative expression, guiding participants to experience the practice of Buddhism in daily life.
Conducted entirely in English, the retreat attracted over twenty participants from Austin and nearby areas. Through sitting and walking meditation, mindful breathing, and observation of nature, Venerable Jue Ji led participants to experience the subtle meaning of the “Dharma spoken in silence.” Many attendees shared that during moments of calmness, they became more aware of the arising and passing of thoughts and found balance between body and mind. Creative elements such as “Zen poetry writing” and “mindful chores” were incorporated to help participants cultivate awareness through both words and actions.
In her Dharma talk, Venerable Jue Ji emphasized that wisdom is not the accumulation of knowledge, but rather the ability to be fully aware in the present moment and to see things as they truly are.
On the final day, a Taking Refuge Ceremony was held. In addition to witnessing the ceremony, several participants made vows to take refuge in the Three Jewels. During the BLIA (Buddha’s Light International Association) welcoming tea gathering, new members shared their reflections and insights from the retreat.
The three-day meditation retreat concluded in an atmosphere of serenity and solemnity, opening the door to inner wisdom and compassion for all who attended.
