Written by Xi Xiu

On the afternoon of July 13 at 2:00 PM, Xiangyun Temple held the “Ethereal Drum Music Workshop,” as part of the Austin College program, guided by Teacher Wang Nuan, with eleven enthusiastic participants taking part.

The session began with Venerable Yongjia leading the group in a recitation of the Heart Sutra and sharing Master Hsing Yun’s teaching on “using sound as a means of Dharma practice,” emphasizing the profound significance of music and art in spreading the Dharma and benefiting sentient beings. He encouraged everyone to cherish this opportunity and study diligently.

Teacher Wang Nuan skillfully integrated Zen concepts into the rhythms of the ethereal drum, guiding the participants to achieve harmony of body and mind and a state of peaceful stillness through the flowing melodies.

This session featured Pachelbel’s classic piece Canon in D, performed as a duet of ethereal drum and piano, presented with a symphonic arrangement. The music was elegant and refined, evoking a sense of depth and serenity.

The participants were divided into three groups, and under the teacher’s patient guidance, they became familiar with the music scores and practiced attentively. Before long, the classroom was filled with soft, melodious sounds, imbued with Zen spirit and harmony, bringing tranquility and joy to all present.
