Xiang Yun Temple “Three Acts of Goodness” Children’s Kung Fu Summer Camp Opens
Reported by Humanistic Society journalist David Huang, Austin
On June 9, 2025, the week-long “Three Acts of Goodness Children’s Kung Fu Summer Camp” officially kicked off at Xiang Yun Temple in Austin, with over 20 children participating. The opening ceremony was led by Venerable Jue Ji and Venerable Yong Jia, and began joyfully with the song “The Buddha’s Light Shines on You.”
The summer camp blends Buddhist teachings with physical and mental training. The first day was filled with diverse and enriching activities. Dressed in kung fu uniforms, the children practiced martial arts with focus, developing physical strength and discipline. Guided by the monastics, they learned to sing the “Three Acts of Goodness Song” and explored the principles of “doing good deeds, speaking good words, and thinking good thoughts.”
During the arts and crafts session, the children created “Three Goodness Boxes” and wrote down daily goals for kind actions. Lunch featured American-style vegetarian food in a cheerful atmosphere. In the afternoon, they listened to the Buddhist story “The Turtle and the Celestial Crane,” which taught lessons in emotional management and wisdom for daily life. The children eagerly shared their reflections afterward.
The day concluded with quiet meditation in the main hall, where they practiced respectful gestures such as placing palms together and bowing, gaining a deeper appreciation for the day’s learnings.
The summer camp will continue to support the children’s joyful growth through kung fu and Buddhist teachings.
